How To Choose?

ENGLISH or WESTERN RIDING – What is the difference and how to choose!

English Riding

  • English riding is typically recognized by the lighter saddle with no horn. It includes disciplines such as jumping, dressage, and hunter riding—often what people think of when they hear “equestrian” riding. Because the saddle is lighter and offers less built-in support, riders must develop strong balance, core strength, and leg muscles in order to maintain stability. English disciplines place a strong emphasis on precise body position, correct mechanics, and clear communication between horse and rider.

Western Riding

  • Western riding uses a heavier, broader saddle with a deep seat and horn designed for comfort and stability during long hours in the saddle. Western disciplines include barrel racing, trail riding, pleasure riding, and “cowboy” sports like cutting and reining. Western riding traditionally focuses on using the horse as a working partner and developing skills needed to get tasks done smoothly and efficiently.

Our Recommendation

  1. Do some research yourself and with your child on different riding styles. Search on Google and YouTube.
    1. Type in the question: What is the difference between English and Western Riding.
    2. Your child can always switch during their career as a rider!
  2. Riding helmets are the same for English and Western. Your biggest initial investment may be the footwear. So if your child decides down the road to change disciplines, you aren’t out too much in expense!
  3. Still not sure? Here are some thoughts:
    1. Have your child take one of the introductory 2-day camps where both styles of riding are introduced.
    2. Schedule a special introductory lesson with one of our instructors before signing up.
    3. Call us! We are happy to help!
